19th January 2012 Event

Making the most of museum collections by working collaboratively and creatively is essential in difficult times. Our latest project Artefacts & Affects builds on the work of the Museums Futures Group in terms of developing sustainable partnerships, encouraging community advocacy and ensuring extended reach.
The project is a cross-course, cross-faculty, cross-institutional collaboration aimed at bringing artefacts out of the Southwark Art Collection archives and delivering them to new audiences through innovative curatorial/spatial practices and interventions. Students from the second year of three courses including BA (Hons) Sound Arts; BA (Hons) Interior Design and BA (Hons) Design for Interaction & Moving Image will work to address issues of interpretation, curation, narrative, navigation and spatial exploration. The accompanying catalogue will be designed by BA Book Arts & Design students.
The outputs of the project involving sound art, installations and interactive responses will be located in the LCC Gallery and containers from 12th until 20th January with a reciprocal exhibition in the lobby of the Cuming Museum running at the same time. There will be an event including roundtable talks by guest speakers on 19th January and workshops on Saturday 14th January designed to engage with local community groups including school children and the elderly.
